Sherwood Forest Camp

Sherwood Forest Camp

Down in Southern Missouri just outside of Lesterville, there are 478 acres of secluded Ozark forest that serves as a summer home for children from low-income families and underserved communities in the St. Louis area. Kids from 2nd grade through 9th grade come here to spend anywhere from a week to a month at this wonderful place known as Sherwood Forest Camp.

Sherwood Forest believes education, personal growth, and the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors are fundamental for a formative summer. In the effort to create an environmental impact, Sherwood has a unique approach of balancing traditional camp adventures with programs that reinforce and support school learning. The staff at the camp and in the St. Louis office are dedicated to helping children discover their self-worth, realize their potential, and become productive citizens within their communities.

For a few weeks every summer the young campers get to enjoy the environment without having to worry about where their next meal is coming from. Along with Outdoor Ed, Sherwood gives their campers opportunities to spend their days swimming in the pool and to create masterpieces at Art Barn. You could even find some campers flipping through a book in the Library. Tango Tower, a 100 feet tall climbing tower, is ofcourse one of the more popular spots. At the end of the day, the whole camp gets together as one to take part in a camp-wide activity, like gathering around a bonfire to sing traditional camp songs.

The list of activities goes on and on, but the amazing part is that they help St. Louis children grow and develop. Sherwood Forest’s primary focus is to help kids discover the best in themselves so they can grow up to do good in the world. The kids who come out of this program are the future we need, which is one that helps give more to others. “Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” -Greek Proverb
